"If you can get the milk for free, why buy the cow?" This rather crass question became popular in the late 1970's, when many couples chose to live together without the benefit of marriage. Similarly, today's affiliate marketers tend to favor programs that offer no sign-up fee, especially when so many include support, personalized websites, back-office marketing, etc.

And, too, there are programs that offer nothing more than an ID link and a few banner ads on a login page. In fact, seemingly sophisticated marketers are often offended by a program that requires an up-front investment. And for good reason: the marketer is already investing time, effort and their own marketing system (i.e., money) to promote a given program-- an additional investment seems as if the company is taking advantage of them.

And some do. But not all of them.

In fact, online companies that offer affiliate programs can be divided into roughly three different categories: Those that offer free sign up; those that offer a free sign-up but require some kind of back-end fee; and those that require an up-front investment from their affiliates, as well as a back-end fee. The reasoning behind each strategy varies from program to program and should be considered along with the qualities of each. But, in general terms, these are the basic strategies behind them:

FREE SIGN-UP PROGRAMS
This kind of arrangement is usually offered by those companies that offer little, if any, hands-on support for their affiliates. They supply the link and a login-secure page on their site with several advertising tools, possibly with an automatic payment system, such as through ClickBank or Storm Pay.

These companies are generally small -- possibly only one or two people -- and are hoping to capitalize on the affiliate marketing system with little or no effort on their part. Generally, too, they offer only one product or promotion. For the marketer, unless volume sales are huge, they can expect to make only a few dollars from these types of programs. But, if all they have to do is put an affiliate link on their website to generate sales, this is sufficient for the marketer. Also, a very small percentage of companies in this category offer an MLM system.

PRO: These type of programs are a quick and easy way to cash in on a new product or trend, provided one learns of it early.

CON: Once the market is saturated, sales reduce to the point where even the small space the link takes up on their webpage becomes a loss. Also, unless the company is sound -- as well as responsive to its affiliates -- there is always a chance it could fold up and disappear before the marketer ever sees any actual cash for his or her sales.

FREE SIGN UP WITH BACK END PAYMENT PROGRAM
This is the most common type of arrangement and the companies that employ this seem to be trying to utilize the "best of both worlds" approach. Either the company will offer initial sign-up for free with incentives to upgrade, or they will charge for "extras" in lieu of sales or a downline (in the case of MLMs). Essentially, these companies are "straddling the fence", that is, trying to find a way for the affiliates to cover their own expenses without making an "up-front" investment.

PRO: Programs like this often forego charges once a marketer creates a certain amount of sales or take the charge out of commissions, both of which give the marketer an incentive to make a minimum amount of sales. The companies that use this type of program usually offer adequate back-office support such as a support staff to answer questions, payment schedules that are adaptable to each marketer and regularly updated promotional materials. They also tend to be better established than the completely-free-program companies and often have a physical contact address and telephone number for questions or problems.

CON: Without sales or a downline, marketers are often paying much more in the long run than many up-front investment programs charge. Also, in the case of companies that ARE well-established, a new marketer may be unknowingly entering a field that is fully saturated with other, well-established and more experienced marketers. This makes obtaining the sales they need especially challenging, particularly for the newer marketer. Getting their foot in the door becomes a challenge of its own.

THE UP-FRONT INVESTMENT PROGRAM
These are less common than in the past but still exist -- and, in fact, are still being created -- under certain, specific circumstances. The company that opts for this arrangement may use up-front investment as a way to "pre-qualify" its marketers, hoping to capture only the most professional and serious-minded marketers. They usually offer higher than average incentives and may also have a high-demand product in which the company has already invested heavily themselves. And, too, they may be budgeting for future advancements and product placements, as well as creating support teams specifically designed to help the marketing staff alone. These companies will often include -- to help off-set the investment -- many back-office features not usually offered to marketers in other programs. And, without exception, these companies offer higher-than-average commissions.

PRO: Programs such as this offer more promise to actually obtain the kind of income that has become infamous (not to mention synonymous) with internet marketing. Also, bonuses or other payment arrangements that allow the marketer to make higher than average commissions. Back-end support is usually top-notch including, in some circumstance, the marketer is treated as an actual employee. Some even include benefit packages and other employee-like perks. The product or product line is something in high-demand and/or has a high rate of sales.

CON: The up-front investment obviously causes start-up marketers to turn away. Also, competition from serious marketers who have well-established sites makes succeeding in this field challenging. Further requirements after joining the program that may increase the challenge of succeeding. Due to their inherent popularity, a short time-frame in which joining this type of program is viable in terms of ROI.

In choosing individual programs, a marketer must decide which type is best for them, regarding their resources, their own marketing strategy, the overall ROI (return on Investment), and based on their advertising campaign/budget. Many marketers choose a mixture of these programs in order to minimize their investment while maximizing their return.

Oh and, by the way? In case you're wondering, many of those couples in the 1970's that started out living together, ended up getting married after all. So, what does that say about getting the milk for free?

No matter what size your online business is, whether part-time or full-time, it's essential to operate it just like any other business (online or offline). You must ensure that certain systems and routines are in-place, otherwise it all becomes disorganized, hard work and possibly destined to fail.

When I first started out in my online venture, I joined up for a lot of different programs, subscriptions, memberships and products and before I knew it I had emails galore in my inbox, receipt numbers, passwords, usernames, and account numbers. I quickly become overwhelmed and in total disarray, so right then and there I decided to systematize everything.

The first thing I did was to create a simple database that I called "Account Manager". Here I listed all the company names, dates joined, invoice numbers, usernames, passwords, website, email, whether a once-off or monthly fee, and any relevant comments. What a HUGE difference this made... freeing up much of my time and energy. It certainly made life a lot easier and more disciplined.

Second thing that I set up was a spreadsheet to track income and expenses. Obviously this is very important for tax purposes. But just as important I think, is to constantly monitor your profit and loss situation at any given time... to keep measuring your progress. If you don't monitor the performance of your business, how will you know if it's getting off-track? How will you know what is working and what needs changing? You need to see if you are getting a return on all the time and money you are investing in your business. The spreadsheet that I have set-up is pretty basic and straightforward but I might find later on as the business expands, that an accounting software program is more appropriate... such as Quicken, Quick Books or MYOB (Mind Your Own Business).

The last system that I put into place was a spreadsheet that summarized my entire ad tracking results for advertising campaigns. Now ad tracking, I believe, is extremely important to the overall success of your business. Without the ability to test and measure all of your advertising, you might as well just wear a blindfold. You absolutely MUST KNOW what is working and what is not working so that you can dump the useless ads and keep running the ones that bring you profits. Otherwise you are flushing your hard-earned cash down the drain.

This spreadsheet includes ad cost, number of subscribers (in an ezine), number of clicks, number of sales, cost per sale and ROI (return on investment). This is so simple and yet so effective (and so profitable). At a glance I can see which are my most effective ads and the most effective advertising medium as well. Well worth the effort I feel.

These things take a little bit of effort to set up initially and to get into the routine, but once done it's easy to keep going. The benefits are certainly worth it. I just wish I had set all of this up BEFORE I started. Ah well, hindsight is a wonderful thing.

Early E-commerce

E-commerce actually began long before most of us would have thought. Many years before PCs and laptops in the home and during mobile travel for work or play made Internet commonplace, e-commerce existed.

The first e-commerce occurred way back in 1984, when electronic data interchange (EDI) was made standard through the use of ASC X12 programming. What was important about this was that now companies could reliably complete online transactions with one another. In 1992 Compuserve debuted, offering retail products online to customers for the first time. While this was the first time that e-commerce was enabled for the consumer it was still limited. Consumers had to buy Compuserve, install it on their systems and then subscribe to get into the product. Compuserve did not enable its e-commerce for general public access.

Two years later, in 1994, however, Netscape premiered its online services, offering a simple to use Internet browser. An important part of what Netscape offered was the security necessary for sale online e-commerce transactions. It was called Secure Sockets Layer, and is still a crucial part of every e-commerce transaction or online payment.

Just one year later history was made with the launch of both Amazon.com and eBay.com. Much different than their current e-commerce look, these two online vendor portals at first allowed online purchases but didn't offer any auction based transactions. In fact, at first all Amazon.com offered was the opportunity to buy books, CDs and other print periodicals.

A great part of the reason that e-commerce had not really taken off at this point was because the most common method of getting online, and about all that was available to the public up until 1995, was dial up. It was slow, it interrupted the individual and family's ability to use their own phones and it made e-commerce a cumbersome process.

That's when Digital Subscriber Line, now more commonly referred to as DSL, was introduced. Still using the telephone line, it increased the speed of e-commerce transactions and online search and surfing in general, and offered users the convenience of surfing the Web without tying up their phone line. E-commerce began to grow in popularity as a result.

Broadband soon became a commonplace offering in homes and offices, offering even better speed, an always on convenience and new technology that made the Internet more attractive. E-commerce grew exponentially. As of 1999 Internet spending swelled to $20 billion.

In this case, the opportunity presented to him fits his talents and inclinations exactly, and can well be a stepping stone to greater success.

In evaluating home business opportunities, the lesson is this: choose the opportunities that suit you; in areas that you love and have talents in. You will never go wrong by following this path. If you are interested in plants, start a plant nursery. If you are a book lover, consider starting a book club. If you are passionate about beauty products, consider setting up a small shop, maybe even mixing your own concoctions. The possibilities are endless and infinitely varied. Whether you want to sell goods or to provide services, you only have to make sure that you provide a quality product at a reasonable price. If you are thinking of working at home, then you must first consider all the variables that will be involved in your potential decision. Working at home, like working outside, carries its own set of advantages and disadvantages. It would be good for you to scrutinize each argument, and examine how much weight such arguments should have on your decision.

Some of the advantages of working at home include:

Being your own boss. Most people resent having to work for the benefit of someone else. We are all naturally selfish; we want our work to primarily benefit us. As an employee, your work primarily benefits the company that you work for, and your boss. Being able to choose your associations. Not being stuck in an office means that you won’t have to put up with people that you can’t stand. Instead, you can choose who you want to do business with, and ignore those who aren’t as relevant.

Now, working at home is not a financial cure-all. In fact, you can expect to have a rough time, especially at the beginning. However, as long as you stay disciplined and do the work that you have to do, you can expect your venture to grow, and your profits to grow as well.

Home office costs, such as those that involve office repairs and maintenance. Business furniture and equipment may also qualify for deductions in their year of purchase, as long as the amount does not exceed a certain limit.

Employee wages and employee benefits. If you are an employer of labor, you can deduct a portion of your salary and benefit expenses. Employee education and training costs are also deductible.

Education costs necessary in your line of work. This applies especially to professionals. Those who need continuing education to maintain their expertise may deduct the cost of this education from their tax returns.

Real estate taxes on business property. A portion of real estate taxes are considered deductible by the IRS.

Personal expenses. Some personal expenses, when conducted in conjunction with business affairs, are deductible. A portion of your automobile expenses, meal allocations, and travel and entertainment cots may qualify for deduction, as log as they are related to your business.

A final reminder: Try to maintain as accurate records as is possible. Document your deposits, income, expenses and deductions. This way, you will have proof validating your tax deductions. Because tax laws are complex and often change, it is often advisable to consult a professional. This will allow you to claim as many possible tax deductions for home businesses as you can.

Unscrupulous home business schemes are everywhere these days. If you surf the internet, it seems as though everywhere you turn, you are inundated with ads that tell you how to earn more money than you are now, often for doing something that is easy and non-consequential. These ads usually look like this:

“Be part of one of America's Fastest Growing Industries!”

“Earn thousands of dollars a month, from your home, at only fifteen minutes a day!”

“Want to Learn The Big Secret of the Internet Millionaires! Click Here!”

We’ve all seen these types of ads both on and off the internet. They are appealing, sure. Who doesn’t want to earn ten thousand dollars a month for fifteen minutes of work a day? But you have to be careful. Almost all get-rich-quick schemes are designed to part you from your hard-earned money.

Not all work-at-home opportunities deliver on their promises. What many promoters of home business schemes won’t tell you is that you often have to work for many hours before you earn a single cent. This is dishonesty at its worst, for by now you should know that there is no such thing as something for nothing. Even if you are operating from a solid home business, you will have to work hard and work smartly if you want to be successful. If anybody else tells you otherwise, watch out. Something is probably not quite right.

Ask Questions!

Avoiding dishonest home business schemes is strictly a matter of common sense. Since you will be putting your time and money into this venture, you should definitely do some research. You do this by asking intelligent questions.

Some questions you must ask your work-at-home sponsors include the following:

What is the total cost of the program being offered? Dishonest program often carry hidden costs with them. Be sure to check the fine print before proceeding. Ask for all the costs involved in the program, and ask them to clarify exactly what you get in return for your money.

What exactly will I have to do? Your tasks must be clearly outlined, with every step clearly defined. Confusion on this point is often the source of future contention. When will I get my first paycheck? Beware of programs that will pay for your services much later after you have done the work. This might cause you short-term financial difficulties.

These days, it seems like everyone wants to work

For me, what happened was creating a successful,
self-running Internet marketing system. It didn’t
happen without effort. It didn’t happen without
at least some initial investment of both time and
money and, of course, it doesn’t happen now
without me making sure that the taxes are filed
and the paperwork is done. But it happened.

I’m my own boss. I work from home according to my
own schedule and I get to pocket all the cash my
business makes. If you’re prepared to give an
e-business the time, the work and the money it
needs to get started and get growing, it can
happen for you too.

The traditional structure of the family has been something like this: it was the father’s role to work and earn money, while it was the mother’s role to take care of the children, tend to the house, and accomplish various domestic chores. This is still the dominant pattern of the family today, but what has changed is that the mom, while still staying at home, can earn a little bit of income for herself. With the use of the internet, the millions of mothers now have the chance to ply their skills and talents in the marketplace.

Before we get into the opportunities that exist online, we must mention that business opportunities for stay at home moms exist outside the worldwide web. Many mothers are already interested in a great many things that they could profit financially from. For example, a woman who loves gardening might start her own plant nursery, and run that business from her own backyard. Alternatively, a woman who is an especially proficient baker might start selling her wares to her neighbors. As long as you can offer something of value at a reasonable price, there is no shortage of opportunity for you. That being said, it is probably the internet that offers the most opportunity to stay at home moms, especially opportunities that did not exist before. Affiliate programs can produce a nice stream of residual income – something that all mothers can definitely use. By setting up a content site, a stay at home mother can earn money even while going about her other activities. Running a business from your home is no joke. There are a lot of details that you will need to keep track of if you aspire to be successful. Keep in mind that a home business is in essence not much different from traditional ones. The aim of your business is to make money, remember that. It has to be as efficient and as profitable as you can make it.

Here are the cardinal rules of running your own home business.

Know yourself. You have to have at least a passing knowledge of yourself to be successful in any endeavor. Its cliché, but you have to understand yourself. By examining yourself, you should be able to pinpoint your strengths and weaknesses. You’ll want to capitalize on the former and minimize the effects of the latter. For example, if you are a people person, you might want to handle the service section of your home business. If you are the more analytical type, you might consider becoming your own financial planner and leave the service section to someone else. Again, focus on what you can do well, and apply that skill to your business.

Know your business. Know your trade inside and out, and exhaust all efforts to be up-to-date with all the advances in your realm of business. Read up on what you have to on a regular basis. Newspapers, trade magazines, and business books might be a good place to start. Remember that it is ideas that make real money. Exercise some creativity, call up a few original ideas, and you will have an edge over the competition. Alternatively, you can also combine pre-existing ideas and apply them to your business. By creating or synthesizing ideas, you might be able to create a niche for yourself, which should be the goal of every business.

Know your customers. There is a saying in America, and it goes something like this: “The customer is always right.” However, consider this saying from Japan: “The customer is God.” No matter which saying you believe to be more accurate, you must treat your customers like they are the most valuable persons in your life. After all, it is they that make it possible for you to make a living; it is only proper that you treasure them and that you look out for them, within reason. Study your customers. Try to put yourself in their shoes, anticipate their concerns, and provide for what they want and need.

Under-commit, but over-perform. Amaze people with the level of service you offer, or the quality of the goods that you sell. Exert all reasonable efforts to exceed their expectations. If they want something done by tomorrow, have it done by this afternoon. If they expect a bill of a hundred dollars, give them one for just ninety-five dollars. By doing things a little better than everyone else, your customers will come to associate you with excellence. And who doesn’t want to do business with someone excellent?

Running a home business is fraught with risk, but it can also be a vehicle for huge rewards. However, by studying yourself and your business, and by offering excellent service, you will have a recipe for success. Ignore your fears and take the plunge – you’ll be glad you did.

The dream to work at home is a staple in most people’s minds. What most people don’t know is that there can be drawbacks to working at home as well. As someone who wants to start your own home based business, you should be aware of these pitfalls, so that you can prepare in advance for whatever inconvenience they may pose.

Lack of financial security. Working at home and starting your own home based business carries risk. Unlike a salary, you will not be receiving a fixed amount each month. There’s a large possibility that the compensation you receive will be small in comparison to your regular job, especially at the beginning. The upside, of course, is that you also stand to gain much. Some of the biggest, most profitable businesses today were first small home start-ups. Companies like Microsoft, The Body Shop, and Coca-Cola are examples of companies that were first run from the proverbial garage.

Having to take charge of your own time. Time can either be put to good, profitable use, or it can be wasted. If you are not a disciplined person, then you might have a tough time making the venture work. After all, being at home means that you are comfortable – perhaps too comfortable. You can surf the net, watch TV, fix dinner, play with the kids, shoot some hoops, talk with your friends, read a book, take a nap – there are so many things that threaten to eat up your time when you’re at home. If you really want to work at home, you should first make sure that you can carve up a good amount of time to spend on your business. You should have the ability to set a schedule and stick with it; otherwise you might be heading for financial ruin. However, if you are the kind of person who is willing and able to set your goals and work towards them, then having control of your own time is an incredible advantage. You will be able to set your priorities, manage your tasks, and minimize the waste of your time – things that are difficult to accomplish when you are in someone else’s employ.

Potential isolation. Because you are not forced to interact with other people, you might fall into a tendency to cut yourself off from most daily interactions. This is a danger that those with more conservative or shy personalities face. To counteract this, you simply have to allot a portion of your time to meet friends and meet new people. Never get too engrossed in your work to the detriment of your social life; you’ll just suffer in the end.

Don’t let this little list discourage you from taking the plunge! That’s exactly what most people do, which is why you don’t see a whole bunch of truly rich people in your neighborhood. Scan down this list and fix in your mind how you intend to overcome these obstacles in your path to riches. Knowing your weaknesses is strength – never forget that.
